What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, groove, or opening, especially one for receiving something, such as a coin or a card. Also, a position in a group or sequence. Examples: a slot in the calendar; the 2 p.m. slot for a haircut.

In the casino, a machine that pays out winning combinations of symbols when the right ones line up on the pay lines. It may also have a jackpot, free spins, or bonus games. The name comes from the fact that you insert coins or tokens into the machine to activate the reels. Some modern machines have multiple pay lines, while others have a single fixed line.

Many online slots have adjustable paylines, allowing players to choose how many they want to activate. Those with fixed lines are known as fixed slots and tend to have lower RTPs than those with adjustable paylines. The amount of money you win when the reels stop spinning is determined by how much you bet, how many paylines are active, and whether you have a high or low volatility.

You can add synonyms for a slot to help Dialog Engine recognize the different ways that people say a word or phrase. For example, you can map the slot value New York to the word NYC (pronounced as “slee”). To do this, open the Settings menu and select Synonyms in the left pane. Then, enter the synonym in the Synonyms box next to the slot you want to define.
